The proposal is for the redevelopment of the subject site through demolition of an existing dock system and installation of a replacement dock. The proposed action will consist of removing the existing gangway, floats, one (1) finger float, and fourteen (14) 16-inch diameter creosote-treated timber piles. A total of 1,096 square feet of overwater coverage is proposed for demolition. Pile removal will be completed from a barge in the harbor using a vibratory hammer. All other structures will be removed from the site without the need for heavy equipment.
The existing 1,096 square foot dock system, constructed almost entirely of solid decking, will be redeveloped with a 1,614 square foot dock constructed of grated decking creating a net 45% open area. The proposed development will result in a net increase of 518 square feet of overwater coverage. Five (5) steel guide piles will be driven to keep the floating dock in place. Piles will be driven with a vibratory hammer as far as possible. They will then be driven to final depth with an impact hammer. 24 grounding posts will be installed beneath the corners of the specified float modules ensuring that they do not ground onto the seabed at low tides. Grounding posts will be installed by driving short segments of 12-inch diameter steel pipe with a vibratory hammer. Grounding posts will be proofed with an impact hammer to verify bearing capacity. Pre-cast panels, beams and top plates will be welded or bolted onto the pile foundations to construct the new overwater dock system. Float modules will be fabricated offsite and delivered to the site via barge. The floats will be attached to the guide piles over the grounding posts at high tide. External pile hoops will bolt to the float modules. An 80-foot long gangway will be fabricated off-site, delivered via barge and lifted into position, connecting the fixed pier to the floating dock. Gangway connections will be installed without the need for heavy equipment.
