Final Phase
The final phase of the project began in 2014 with funding awarded through a 2012 Washington State Heritage Capital Projects Grant. Reconstruction of the interior and exterior marine railways provides boat launch access for the boat building. A condition of the clean-up required removal of both railway systems. The slideshow images show the site in various stages of reconstruction. Nearly all the steel piling were paid for thru donations raised by the Gig Harbor BoatShop.
Nighttime tides forced late-night work in order to access and trim the tops of each piling in preparation for placement of the rails.
The entire system will meet current water quality standards, Equally important, this project will maintain an important characteristic of Gig Harbor's historic maritime identity: traditional boat building. For more information, view the 2006 Historic Structures Report (PDF).
