2017 Sign Code Update



Reed vs. The Town of Gilbert (US Supreme Court Decision, 2015) identified areas in which jurisdictions may need to amend their sign code, specifically in relation to 'off-premise' signs. The recent ruling does not allow jurisdictions to have criteria based upon the sign message. Regulations must be limited to location, duration, design, materials, etc.

Process and project timeline

The planning department will be working on the sign code update in conjunction with the Planning Commission during the 2017 work program. We will be holding a series of public meetings and multiple outreach efforts to gain input, suggestions, and preferred direction relating to the necessary amendments.

The City's Planning Commission has met a handful of times on this topic in preparation for the public outreach and input.
