Wilkinson Community Garden

In 2008, local resident Dave Wheeler (pictured below) and Bill Bower of the YMCA, in collaboration with the City of Gig Harbor, initiated a Community Garden at Wilkinson Farm.  Seeds were planted in the same location where Helen Wilkinson's pioneer family harvested crops decades ago.

In 2009 Barbara Carr, another local resident, took the lead and with the help of sponsors and volunteers from Healthy Communities of Pierce County, St. Anthony Hospital, the Boys and Girls Club, Healthy Harbor and volunteers from the area, the garden took shape.  A double fence of fishing net donated by local fisherman, Paul Ancich, protects the bounty from deer.

In July, Sumner Schoenike delivered the garden's first harvest to our local FISH facility.  Produce includes tomatoes, crook neck squash, peppers, cucumbers, onions and zuchini.
