Government
The City of Gig Harbor is governed by an elected mayor and seven-member council, and managed by a city administrator. The surrounding Peninsula area is governed by the Pierce County Council under the direction of a county executive.

Emergency Services
Emergency services are provided through 9-1-1.  The Gig Harbor Police Department has 24-hour patrol. the Pierce County Sheriff's Department maintains a full detachment station in Gig Harbor.  In addition, the Washington State Patrol maintains a precinct on the Peninsula. Pierce County Fire District No. 5 and No. 16 have full-time employees and many volunteers.

Climate
Gig Harbor is located on Puget Sound in the northwest pacific coast of Washington.  The Cascade Range and the Olympic Mountains serve as barriers to easterly and northerly weather systems. Weather is moderate the year round with delightful summers.
